Held since 1934 in the Blue Hall of Stockholm City Hall annually on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, the banquet follows the esteemed Nobel Prize Awards. The event is attended by the King and Queen of Sweden and the other members of the Royal Family, plus approximately 1300 guests, including Nobel Laureates, politicians, dignitaries and other VIPs, as well as seen by the viewing audience of a High Definition television broadcast by Swedish Television (SVT).

It was the 90th anniversary of the Miss America Pageant and a pair of grandMA2 light’s made their debut at the show, which was telecast live on ABC from the Planet Hollywood casino-resort in Las Vegas. The pageant reunited lighting designer Allen Branton, who returned for the fourth time, and fellow lighting directors Kevin Lawson and Felix Peralta, who marked their third year and fourth year on the show respectively. This also marked the first time that Lawson and Peralta had used the grandMA 2 on a live televised broadcast beautiful.

The „Schauspielhaus Bochum“ (Playhouse Bochum) is one of Germany’s biggest and best known theatres. Build in 1908 as a Variety theatre, it became the town theatre in 1915 and was the biggest stage in the “Ruhrgebiet”. During an air raid in 1944 it was nearly completely destroyed, and then rebuilt based on the design of architect Gerhard Moritz Graubner in an operation lasting until 1953.

Nearly ninety Clay Paky motorized spotlights were used in the Italian television variety show “I Migliori Anni” (The Best Years). The programme is directed by Maurizio Pagnussat and hosted by Carlo Conti, and consists of a televoting competition between pieces of music from different decades. The contest between the decades (1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s) takes place with the participation of several guest musicians, and is an opportunity to commemorate historical events and famous celebrities who appeared on the television of the era.

When production meetings began for the Bob Dylan Fall Tour, a few challenges for the lighting design would become evident. First, the tour would be playing venues that varied greatly in size and location; and second, at a Bob Dylan show one thing is clear; it’s all about the music. While many tours may rely heavily on color changes, strobe effects, columns of light or intense video, this tour would rely on the opposite, simplicity. To overcome these challenges, the production team turned to their longtime tour provider TMS who brought in 35 VARI*LITE luminaires.

While the renovation restored the historic theatre’s façade and interior to their original splendour, the stage itself also has newfound beauty. The stature of the tour - produced by TPO (The Production Office) headed by production manager Chris Vaughan - reflects the massive popularity of Take That. This year's Eurovision Song Contest, the 54th edition of the famous show, took place at the Olympic Indoor Arena in Moscow, Russia. It was the biggest contest held to date, with 550 tons of production equipment in 42 trailer trucks sent to Russia’s capital. Nearly 2,000 square metres of LED screens plus approximately 700 moving lights were assembled. 42 artists participated in the contest. For control of most of the massive lighting rig, Lighting Designer Al Gurdon used a grandMA system consisting of 4 x grandMA full-size consoles and 16 x MA NSPs (Network Signal Processors).

Rock legends AC/DC are electrifying sell-out crowds on their first tour in eight years, and grandMA is plugged into the excitement. The band’s long-awaited Black Ice World Tour comes on the heels of its “Black Ice” album for Columbia Records and takes as its theme the first track, Rock ’n’ Roll Train, with the stage featuring five curved trusses reminiscent of a railroad station’s roof beams. The grandMA is circling the globe with Lighting Designer/Director/Programmer Susanne Sasic for R.E.M.’s world tour in support of the Athens, Georgia-based alternative rock band’s latest album, “Accelerate.” “We have carried a grandMA full-size for lighting control on all of our shows this year; it is definitely my console of choice,” says Sasic. “The entire summer leg of this tour has been either European festivals or different local productions of our own shows.” The grandMA controls the entire rig of moving lights, fixtures and dimmers.
