The 52nd Eurovision Song Contest was held at the Hartwall Arena in the Finnish capital of Helsinki in early May. A record 42 nations participated in what is becoming an ever-more complex and sophisticated technical production event that was broadcast to an estimated global TV audience of 100 million. Following the success of last year's Eurovision show in Athens, it was decided that a similar system be used in Helsinki. The original Holy Trinity Anglican Parish Church in Tauranga, New Zealand, was destroyed by fire in 1999, only to rise from the ashes four years later as a striking new structure of concrete and steel. The centerpiece of the new church complex is the 900-seat, semi-circular worship auditorium, where a stunning acoustical ceiling treatment (made with rare kauri wood salvaged from the old church) conceals a nearly invisible system of Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeakers.

The opening and closing ceremonies of the Summer Olympic Games are always breathtakingly spectacular events that involve months of planning and detailed production work, and the Summer Olympics in Athens this year were no exception. Spearheading the massive production effort for both ceremonies was Australian company Norwest Productions (who also supplied production services for the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney) in association with local Athens-based firm, Enttech S.A. on behalf of Jack Morton Public Events. Norwest's sound reinforcement system of choice was based on EAW's KF850 Virtual Line Array system supplemented by McCauley MLA3s for the upper decks.

Over 400,000 people attended the Catholic Movement meeting, Azione Cattolica, held in Loreto on 4th and 5th September. The weekend event included performances from a number of Italian stars and a concert given by the RAI (Italian state television) orchestra and choir, culminating on Sunday afternoon with Holy Mass celebrated by the Pope himself. Production company Limelite turned to Milan-based rental company M.M.S. to handle sound reinforcement for the event.

The tiny island nation of Iceland in the North Atlantic enjoyed the show of a lifetime in July when Metallica inaugurated the new Egilshöllin indoor soccer stadium in ReykjavÌk. Sound for the Dance Tent at Glastonbury 2004 was provided by Manchester-based hire company Audile, with assistance from Funktion-One and XTA. With the main system comprising thirty-two stacks of Funktion-One’s Resolution-5 system, Audile augmented their own considerable stock with self-powered boxes from Funktion-One, with extra drive provided by XTA. XTA’s Series-2 dynamics processors also featured prominently in the spec, with Audile augmenting their own Series-2 FOH rack with a monitor rack supplied by XTA.

During the summer, Rome gives free rein to its calling as a city of art and culture. Last year, ten million people attended over four thousand events, exhibitions and performances that took place across Rome as part of the Roman Summer billboard. Naturally, an important part of this program is the opera, which takes place in the Baths of Caracalla. Built in about 217 AD, the Baths of Caracalla were a later and grander example of a culture already well established in Rome by the middle of the 4th century BC. The huge, vaulted interior, which contained space for 1600 bathers, offered baths, swimming pools, lecture halls, lounges, and exercise facilities. Once lined in marble, the ruins of the Baths of Caracalla now provide a majestic open-air setting for opera performances.

One of Europe's most popular Jazz festivals, "Jazz on the Danube," now established as one of the ten largest jazz festivals in the world, took place in Straubing, the home of EVI Audio in Germany, in mid-July. Some 8,000 music lovers came to Straubing to hear performances from jazz legends such as BB King, Till Brönner and Die Söhne Mannheims. Based on the success of last year¹s festival, organisers Heinz and Ralph Huber turned once again to Telex EVI for their sound reinforcement needs.
